Disclosing her government's plan to resolve the country's power crisis, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told the House that over 13,000-MW electricity would be added to national grid by 2016. The Prime Minister said 1986-MW power would be added this year while 3339-MW, 3297-MW, 2182-MW and 2350-MW would in added respectively in the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. She said under the government plan, 27 power plants with capacity of 4830- MW electricity are being constructed and the plants will be go for commissioning from 2012 to 2014. The PM said the present government after taking office has undertaken many short, medium and long-term
projects with a target to produce 24,000-MW power. Under the plan, she said 51 power plants with capacity of 3595-MW have already gone for commercial production, reaching the country's total power generation capacity to 8315- MW. She said in the month of Ramadan country's highest demand for power was 6350-MW while average daily power generation was 6000-MW in the backdrop of availability of fuel. From July 20, she said, there was no load shedding from generation side.
The Prime Minister said a total of 18 Independent Power Plant (IPP) and nine public sector power plants would go for generation by 2016 after construction. Besides, 25 power projects including 17 IPPs now remained under purchasing process.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government has designed a macro-economic plan in light of the global economic situation to raise the country's per capita income to US$ 2000 by 2021.
She said the government is updating the National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) to ensure environment friendly development and social justice through proper conservation and
utilization of natural resources.
In response to a question from female member Faridunnahar Laily during Prime Minister's question-answer session in the parliament yesterday, she said the country is on the track of constant higher and sustainable economic growth.
She expressed her firm confidence that Bangladesh will be a middle-income country through proper implementation of the economic programmes particularly the sixth five-year plan and national sustainable development strategy undertaken by the government in light of 'Vision 2021'.
Country's poverty is coming down at a rate of 2.46 percent and it would decline to 26.4 percent in 2012. Besides, income discrepancies among people also marked lower, reducing the number of population under poverty, she added.
The Prime Minister said her government has embarked upon implementation of a long-term 'Perspective Plan (2010-2021)'prepared giving emphasis to poverty reduction, improvement of per capita income, proper monetary management, increasing revenue income and higher economic growth.
She said the 'Perspective Plan' has a target of reducing poverty rate to 22.5 percent by 2015 and 13.5 percent by 2021. In view of this, she said, GDP growth has been targeted 8 percent by 2015 and 10 percent by 2021.
During the period of Perspective Plan, the Prime Minister said, total revenue income of the country would be 20 percent of GDP, and national savings would be 39.1 percent and internal investment would be 38 percent..
Referring to constant higher growth of overall government investment over the last three years, she said the government has implemented annual development programmes (ADP) of Taka 55,000 crore in 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The Prime Minister said the government would publish the revised National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) making it suiting to sixth five-year plan and Vision 2021.
Responding to a supplementary question, the Prime Minister said her government has successfully implemented different programmes in fulfillment of its electoral commitment to build a Digital Bangladesh.
